"Reading is so much more than a classroom activity—it’s the key to unlocking a world of possibilities for students. When children develop strong reading skills, they gain confidence, build knowledge and open the door to academic success in every subject. Whether it’s deciphering a word problem in math, exploring the themes of a historical event or understanding the instructions for a science experiment, reading is the thread that ties learning together. ” – Danielle Luebbe, Concordia University
At Harrison Schools, we couldn't agree more. Fostering a love for reading in every student is an important focus, and the team at Forest Heights Elementary has rolled out the red carpet for literacy with two brilliant new programs that turn reading into a friendly competition: "Minute Madness" and "Caught Reading."
Forget boring homework—these initiatives are designed to get students amped up about cracking open a book!
Caught Reading: Stickers, Prizes, and Book Vending Machines!
Want to win? Just get caught reading! Whether they're nose-deep in a novel during quiet time, flipping pages in the car rider line, or even skimming a textbook in the hallway, any student "caught reading" earns a special sticker.
Principal Mark Ditmanson is ready to hand out awesome prizes when students hit certain sticker milestones, including the ultimate reward: extra chances to choose a brand-new book from the school’s exciting book vending machine!
Minute Madness: The Hunt for the Golden Book Trophy
It's time for some friendly, page-turning rivalry! Every month, the classroom that logs the most minutes reading outside of school will be celebrated with a special golden book trophy—a symbol of literary excellence to proudly display until the next month's challenge! It's a fun and visible way to celebrate the powerful benefits of literacy!
Parents, your help is key! Please encourage your student to read often and ensure those minutes are accurately logged on their calendar. Let’s rally behind our students and watch them crush their reading goals and unlock that "power" of literature!
