Mr. Magness reads to kids

Today, September 26th, marks the birthday of John Chapman, better known as the legendary American pioneer, Johnny Appleseed (born in 1774).

Students in Bayley Howard and Ginger Patton's classes at Harrison Preschool spent the day celebrating and culminating their unit of study focused entirely on apples. The hands-on curriculum involved numerous educational and sensory activities, including:

  • Bobbing for apples

  • Making applesauce in the classroom

  • A comparative apple-tasting activity where students sampled and voted on their favorite red, yellow, and green apple varieties

  • A classroom apple volcano science demonstration

  • Preparing and eating apple nachos

To get into the spirit of the day, students also created and wore special "Johnny Appleseed" hats, to celebrate all they have learned.

The celebration concluded with a special visit from "Johnny Appleseed" himself. Mr. Josh Magness, Principal of Skyline Heights Elementary, visited the preschool to read and engage with the students about the historical figure and his work.

The day provided a comprehensive, engaging way for young students to learn about history, science, and agriculture.
