Thanks to a grant from the Harrison Public Schools Foundation, Harrison Middle School teacher Stephanie Benton and her students have launched an incredible, student-led initiative called Homegrown Stories! Through this project, students are working to preserve the stories of local farmers by bringing them to life in a series of children's books.
This student-led project partners with local author Brandy Mincer for a unique, hands-on learning experience that blends literacy, science, and entrepreneurship. Students are taking the lead—from interviewing the local Burns Family for the first book, writing the stories with mentorship from the author, and managing the marketing plan.
The project is designed to give back: books will come with standards-based lesson plans for local teachers, and all proceeds will fund future books as well as a scholarship for a graduating senior pursuing agriculture, writing, or journalism.
Homegrown Stories is an incredible way to highlight the vital role of local agriculture while giving students real-world business and publishing experience.
