Students at Rocky Branch School

Harrison Schools' 4th grade Gifted & Talented students had a memorable day yesterday, trading their modern classrooms for the history-rich environment of the Rocky Branch One-Room Schoolhouse.

The field trip served as the perfect culmination of their class reading, which has focused recently on Laura Ingalls Wilder's Little House in the Big Woods. The writings of Mrs. Wilder offer students a look into American pioneer life during the late 19th century, with rich educational content that provides many various learning opportunities.

At the restored schoolhouse, which served as a public school until 1954, the GT class was "transported back to 1905." Students participated in an immersive program, complete with lessons and recess, all reminiscent of a school day from the past. They practiced reading aloud, explored the McGuffey's Readers textbooks, practiced spelling using slates and chalk, learned about the era’s dress codes, and even enjoyed traditional recess games.

The field trip program is a partnership with the Rogers Historical Museum, which helps maintain the historical accuracy and educational value of the experience. The schoolhouse itself was restored by the Rocky Branch School Association in 1994, ensuring its preservation for future generations.

We extend our sincere thanks to the Rogers Historical Museum for helping us provide such an amazing and educational day for our students!
