HHS Agri Students Practice Skills

Harrison Schools is incredibly proud of the energy and skill demonstrated by our students in the Harrison High School Agriculture Program! The Ag department has been bustling with incredible hands-on instruction, allowing students to grow their knowledge and practical skills across a very wide range of subjects.

Students have been studying core animal and veterinary concepts. In clinical skills labs, students gained experience by learning to administer sutures. They practiced precision cutting and suturing techniques on bananas and then oranges to perfect their delicate touch. Other Ag classes dove deep into livestock management by:

  • Hosting a competitive mock cattle auction where students bid on their own herds, studying the cattle market to learn what goes into buying and selling livestock. (Thank you to Dr. Villines for serving as the auctioneer!)

  • Building impressive 3D models of cattle breeds to bring their knowledge of unique features to life.

  • Exploring the Natural Resources unit with a fish dissection lab, investigating internal and external anatomy.

  • Conducting experiments on rumen microbes, understanding the essential biological process of digestion in ruminant animals.

  • Congratulations go out to the top Showmanship Winners from the "Showin' Pigs" activity: Maddix Steinman, Josiah Gellen, Ava Thomason, Tuscany Wallace, and Allison Palma!

Beyond animal care, students sharpened technical and environmental skills crucial for future careers:

  • Ag Mechanics students honed their trade abilities by practicing welding, focusing on sharpening skills and creating with precision.

  • Plant Science students moved their learning outdoors into the greenhouse for hands-on planting, cultivating vegetables and flowers while learning essential concepts like germination and soil health.

From the kitchen to the lab, science and skills were on full display:

  • Food Science students got sticky and sweet by making homemade saltwater taffy, learning lab skills from boiling sugar to hitting the perfect temperature through plenty of sticky trials (and a few sweet successes!).

  • Other students learned the science of preservation by turning fresh cucumbers into delicious homemade pickles through brining and mixing—a true "dill-lightful" experience!

  • Finally, to celebrate the season, students took a break for a collaborative project where they made and decorated festive Rice Krispy treats, showcasing their creativity and teamwork with monster faces and candy corn designs.

We are incredibly proud of our students and our great Harrison High School Agriculture team for consistently providing instruction that is engaging, educational, and fun!
