There’s more than just paint on the brushes in Coach April Mattix's 7th and 8th-grade art classes at Harrison Middle School—there's a whole lot of heart!
This week, our middle school artists are diving into a powerful community service project called “Gratitude Blocks.” Combining the principles of art with the spirit of Thanksgiving, students are crafting beautiful, handmade wooden blocks for the residents of our area nursing homes. It's a wonderful opportunity to bridge the age gap and spread some much-needed joy!
This isn't just a simple craft project; it's a thoughtful lesson in both visual art and community connection. Here's a peek at how our students are turning plain wood into little messages of hope:
Sanding & Soul: Each student started by carefully sanding their wooden block, preparing a clean canvas for their gratitude message.
Color & Contrast: Next, they chose a base color, paying close attention to the art element of color to set the right mood.
Typography Focus: The most crucial step is painting a key word such as "Thankful", "Grateful", or "Blessed"—on the block.
Adding Character: A little sanding on the edges gives the block a beautiful, rustic feel. Students then add unique details to add their own style.
To make this gift truly personal and forge a connection across generations, each student is also penning a handwritten letter to accompany their block. This letter is more than just a friendly note; it's a sincere reflection. Students are asked to think deeply about their chosen word and explain its personal meaning, ensuring the recipient knows this gift comes from the heart.
We are incredibly proud of our students for using their creativity to make a positive impact in the community and setting a good example for all. Be on the lookout for these special "Gratitude Blocks" making their way to area residents very soon - and please join us in saying GOOD JOB, STUDENTS!
