Students in parade

Students in the first and second grades at Forest Heights Elementary School concluded a multi-disciplinary instructional unit on Thanksgiving parade traditions this afternoon by hosting their very own Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade simulation.

The unit began with an engaging literary and historical study focusing on Balloons over Broadway, a Caldecott Honor-winning book by Melissa Sweet. The book tells the inspiring story of Tony Sarg, the innovative puppeteer responsible for inventing the giant helium balloons that have become the signature feature of the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade.

Following their reading, the students embraced a STEM challenge. They transitioned from readers to designers, applying what they had learned to create their own unique balloon floats.

When completed, the first and second-grade designers proudly paraded their finished floats down the main hallways of the school. The remainder of the student body was seated along the route, clapping, offering enthusiastic support and cheering for the participants and their creations.

This educational unit successfully blends literacy, history, and hands-on design, providing a fun, memorable and comprehensive learning experience for students. Please join us in saying, "Good work, students!"
