Build program trainees

At Harrison School District, we believe that literacy is the foundation of all future success. To ensure every student has the tools they need to soar, six of our dedicated educators are currently going above and beyond by training in the "Build" program—a specialized early reading intervention system.

The "Build" program, developed by experts at The Written Word, is designed to provide intensive, small-group support for our youngest learners. By focusing on the "Science of Reading," this training equips teachers with the latest methodologies to help students develop the phonological awareness and decoding skills necessary for lifelong literacy.

Celebrating Our Dedicated Educators We are proud to recognize the following teachers who are investing their time and energy into this advanced training:

  • Harrison Kindergarten: Alesha DeWeese and Teresa Hill

  • Skyline Heights Elementary: Danielle Leigh and Zidan Strough

  • Forest Heights Elementary: Amy Nicholas and Alexandra Jones

These teachers are adding this expertise to our district’s existing "Take Flight" program, creating a comprehensive "safety net" of support for students who need extra help. While Take Flight is a cornerstone of our literacy efforts, the Build program allows us to reach students even earlier, closing potential gaps before they widen.

"We know that if we begin interventions with our youngest learners, we are providing the best supports to fill the gaps," says Matt Piper, District Literacy and Assessment Coordinator.

This initiative is a direct reflection of our district’s mission: Building the Future: Every Learner. Every Day. Every Way. By staying at the forefront of educational research and supporting our teachers in their professional growth, Harrison Schools is ensuring that every child who walks through our doors is prepared for a bright future.
