Susan Gilley presenting at conference

What does the future of school business look like? Our very own Susan Gilley, Executive Director of Federal Programs and Instructional Technology, is answering that question today in Hot Springs as a featured presenter for the 2026 AASBO Conference.

Susan is leading an essential session titled "Artificial Intelligence Basics: A Guide for School Business Officials," helping educational leaders across Arkansas understand how to responsibly use AI to support school operations. Drawing on her 40 years of experience in education—including roles as a business teacher, technology coordinator, and administrator—Susan is providing a practical roadmap for integrating these new tools into the district office.

Key Highlights from her Presentation:

  • The "Thought Partner" Approach: Susan is demonstrating how AI serves as a powerful drafting and summarizing tool. It can help officials turn rough notes into clear documents, rewrite complex financial explanations for different audiences, and organize scattered thoughts quickly.

  • Efficiency for School Finance: The session covers real-world "wins" for business offices, such as using AI to draft budget narratives, create audit prep checklists, and even assist with procurement planning and reporting.

  • Responsible Innovation & Guardrails: A major focus of her session is the ethical use of technology. Susan emphasizes that while AI can save time, it never replaces professional judgment, makes financial decisions, or ensures compliance—humans must always remain accountable.

  • Data Privacy: She is also providing critical guidance on maintaining safety, reminding officials to never put sensitive student (PII) or employee data into AI tools.

We are proud to have Susan representing the Harrison School District on the state stage, sharing her expertise to help school districts work more efficiently and effectively!
