Harrison Preschool is emphasizing the importance of early literacy throughout the month of February with their "For the Love of Reading" initiative. To help celebrate, the school welcomed a special guest storyteller today: Harrison Schools’ Director of Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment, Debbie Wilson.
The preschool was buzzing with energy as Mrs. Wilson sat down with our youngest Goblins to share a favorite tale, "I Will Love You Anyway" by Mick and Chloe Inkpen.
The students excitedly followed the adventures of a spirited little dog who—despite his best intentions—finds himself in constant trouble. From ruined rugs to "great escapes" from the garden, the story’s humorous "confessional" style led to plenty of laughter and vocal "uh-ohs" from the children.
Beyond the giggles, the book carries a powerful message for our little learners: that even when we make mistakes or have a "bad dog" day, we are still deeply loved.
At HPS, we know that literacy is about more than just sitting still; it’s about engagement and joy. Having district leaders like Mrs. Wilson participate in these moments reinforces the high value we place on early childhood education.
Why these lively reading sessions are so beneficial:
Language Acquisition: Hearing descriptive, rhythmic text helps preschoolers build a robust vocabulary long before they pick up a chapter book.
Comprehension through Engagement: When students vocally react to a character’s mischief, they are practicing "active listening" and understanding cause-and-effect.
Social-Emotional Learning: Discussing the dog’s mistakes helps children navigate their own emotions and understand the beautiful concept of unconditional love.
Building a Reading Culture: When Goblins see that reading is fun and celebrated by adults they look up to, it sparks a lifelong interest in books.
A huge thank you to Mrs. Wilson for sharing her time and helping our Harrison Preschool Goblins discover just how much fun a good book can be!
