This morning, Harrison High School’s Agriculture students moved from theory to practice as they conducted a detailed poultry dissection lab under the direction of instructor Skip Emmett.
The activity serves as the culmination of a comprehensive unit on animal body systems. Students worked in small groups to identify and study the functions of the heart, lungs, liver, thyroid, and other vital organs.
“We’ve been studying all of this in class, and now we’re tying it all together by looking inside these birds,” said Mr. Emmett. “I’m so proud of our students—look at them, they’re doing such a good job.”
The lab was made possible through a generous donation of chickens from our local Tyson Foods plant. This partnership allows students to engage with high-quality biological specimens, bridging the gap between classroom instruction and real-world agricultural science.
“We’re very grateful to Tyson’s for donating to our students,” Emmett added.
By observing these systems firsthand, students gain a deeper understanding of animal health, metabolism, and the biological complexities essential to the agricultural industry. The Harrison School District remains committed to providing these types of hands-on, career-ready experiences for all students.
