Students at work planting flowers

Our 5th and 6th-grade Gifted and Talented (GT) students celebrated National Plant a Flower Day on March 12 by getting their hands dirty for a great cause! In a wonderful collaboration with the Marion County Master Gardeners, our students transformed everyday plastic jugs into portable, high-functioning mini-greenhouses.

Under the expert guidance of Master Gardeners Paula Swan, Chris, and Lincoln, students didn't just plant seeds—they explored the science of life.

This hands-on workshop went far beyond the potting soil. Our students tackled big ideas, including:

  • The Science of Growth: Understanding exactly what living things need to thrive.

  • Mimicking Nature: Using recycled materials to create a "greenhouse effect" that helps seeds germinate early.

  • Sustainable Skills: Learning the importance of seed libraries, reducing waste, and the vital role agriculture plays in the Arkansas economy.

  • Self-Sufficiency: Gaining the lifelong skill of growing their own food and flowers.

A huge Harrison shout-out to Ms. Paula and the Master Gardeners for providing such an incredible, "beyond the classroom" learning experience.
