Something was buzzing at Harrison Middle School last night—and it wasn’t just the conversation! Our 5th and 6th-grade Gifted and Talented (GT) students wrapped up their Sustainable Agriculture Unit by hosting the first-ever Bug Bistro, a unique family night dedicated to the world of entomophagy (the practice of eating insects).
While eating bugs might sound like a "dare" to some, our students approached it as a global solution. As part of their curriculum, they studied how different cultures around the world embrace insects as a protein-packed, eco-friendly food source.
The HMS cafeteria was completely transformed into a high-end dining experience where students didn't just provide the food—they managed the "business."
Families were given fake currency to pay for their exotic snacks, putting our students' math skills to the test! Students were responsible for:
Taking Orders: Using custom notepads unique to each student.
Calculating Totals: Adding up the meal costs to create accurate tickets.
The "Check Out": Processing payments just like a real-world restaurant!
Families were invited to step outside their comfort zones and sample a variety of "delicacies," including grasshoppers, crickets, and even scorpions! For every item sampled, guests earned raffle entries for bug-themed buttons (made by Harrison High School FBLA) and even their own packets of edible crickets to take home.
To cap off the night, students were presented with Certified Entomophagist certificates to recognize their expertise and adventurous spirits.
"I got a lot of positive feedback from the parents, and the kids seemed to be having a blast," said GT teacher Becca Jackson.
We are so proud of these students for their creativity, teamwork, and willingness to explore big solutions for our planet's future!
