Harrison students/families, We are excited to announce that the annual Reflections Contest is coming up! Students may enter their works of art in 6 different categories including: Visual Arts, Literature, Photography, Musical Composition, Dance Choreography, and Film Production. There is also a special category for students with disabilities. Entries must be related to the theme "Accepting Imperfections". Entry forms and guidelines for entries will be available for your student to pick up in your school office. Our after school program will be closed next week on Tuesday, Oct. 15 and Thursday, Oct. 17 because of parent/teacher conferences. Parent/teacher conferences will be held on 10/15 and 10/17 from 3:30 - 6:30 pm each day.

UPCOMING HMS Picture Day Information: Picture Day - Thursday, October 17 Makeup Pictures - Friday, November 22. *If a student misses both days, their picture might not be in the yearbook.. MANY STUDENTS have not returned the permission slip to have their picture in the yearbook. If we don’t get that back, their picture won’t be in the yearbook.Dark solid colors of clothing usually photographs best. Students will be asked to remove hoodies and jackets before meeting the photographer (unless that is part of their outfit somehow). Clothing needs to be school appropriate (including the modesty, no hat, and only appropriate wording expectations). More info: Check with Mrs. Beardsley or the yearbook committee 1st period.
This Friday is Hat Day! Cost is $1 to wear a hat to help support the after school program! Money goes to your homeroom teacher. (Hats cannot have inappropriate words on them)

HMS is getting geared up for the BATTLE OF THE BOOKS and all students are invited to participate! Students are receiving information about this from their ELA teachers and will be receiving a newsletter explaining how it works (newsletter will be on our webpage). This is a great way for our students to read, have fun with their peers, and work on team building skills.

HMS Battle of the Books: Students form teams and return the team sign up form by September 27. Students will meet once per month with their small group during school lunch. Over the next several months students will try to read as many of this year’s Battle of the Books selections as they can. Teams will compete against each other (much like Jeopardy) in the school battle in April or May. The top team will move on to compete against other teams for the grand championship for 2024- 2025. Awards TBD.

Dear Parent/Guardian, During the next few weeks we will be conducting our annual health screening, including a scoliosis screening, at Harrison Middle School. Our scheduled dates are September 17th and 19th for vision/hearing/BMI and September 26th for the scoliosis screenings. The procedure for a scoliosis screening is a simple one, in which the student is observed as he/she stands upright and he/she bends forward. To observe this condition, each child will be asked to remove their shirt or blouse (girls may wear a bra or bathing suit top with an open back, boys may wear an A shirt). The screening will be conducted with privacy with only the student and 2 district school nurses present. We encourage all students to participate in this program. If you do not want your child to be screened, please let us know in writing at least 3 days prior to the screening date. Phone calls will not be accepted. If your child is currently under treatment for a back problem, please let us know in writing. In accordance with state mandates, if you have already declined screenings for this school year, please provide the appropriate documentation from your physician that they have completed the corresponding screening(s) within the past year. Not providing documentation will result in individual cases being reported to the Arkansas Department of Education. Thank You, Lauren Holt, RN Harrison Middle School Handbook Excerpt-from Section 7.30 The Harrison School District nurses’ provide annual screenings of vision and hearing for all students and Body Mass Index and Scoliosis for mandated grades. The intent of the exams or screenings shall be to detect contagious or infectious diseases or defects in hearing, vision, or other elements of health that would adversely affect the student’s ability to achieve their full potential. The district shall notify parents annually through the school website, announcements, or notes home of the specific or approximate dates of any non-emergency screening, administered by the school and scheduled by the school in advance and not necessary to protect the immediate health and safety of the student or of other students. Except in instances where a student is suspected of having a contagious or infectious disease, parent/guardians shall have the right to opt their student out of exams/screenings by written notification to the school or by providing certification from a physician that he/she has recently examined the student.

Canvas Parent Observer Account Setup Instructions WHAT IS CANVAS? Canvas is a Learning Management System (LMS), where your student’s online learning actually happens. Students can take tests, quizzes, do homework and watch lessons. Canvas has the ability for Parents to act as a Student Observer. You now have the ability to see what exactly is going on in your child's classes. Observers are linked to one or more students; while you cannot submit course work on their behalf, you can see grades, assignments, events and any course interaction. HOW DO I BECOME AN OBSERVER? In order to become a Student Observer you must first have your child generate a pairing code. Once you have a pairing code, please follow these steps to register an account. If you already have a parent account click here for instructions on adding a pairing code to your account. Directions for the Web: 1. Access Canvas at: https://harrisonk12.instructure.com/login/canvas 2. Click the account link at the top of the page. 3.
